This empowers them to have an informed voice to share in our classroom discussions, where I am the facilitator. What it really comes down to is that faculty members and administrators serving as mentors must be open to listening to and acting on students’ needs, which may be related to students’ personal identities and cultural experiences. Currently, Science and Health research is not serving the population equally, under-representing many diverse minority groups from employment through to involvement. The Science of Diversity & Inclusion Initiative (SODI) brings together leading researchers and organizations to identify, accelerate, and apply new evidence-based approaches to advance diversity, inclusivity, and belonging in our places of work and learning. Each unit concludes with an essay, with informal writing across the semester. Science workforce diversity refers to cultivating talent, and promoting the full inclusion of excellence across the social spectrum. The Diversity and Inclusion Progression Framework is a tool for professional bodies to assess and monitor their progress on diversity and inclusion. For seminar series to reach their potential as tools to promote inclusion, organizers must take care to invite speakers from varied backgrounds. Within the context of graduate education, for instance, it means going beyond focusing exclusively on the number of students belonging to particular populations and moving toward creating a culture in which students from historically marginalized backgrounds feel that they are truly part of the fabric of the institution. Having the chance to see and interact with scientists across a range of dimensions of diversity can help students develop their identities as scientists. We investigate the proposed explanations of why there are few women in the upper echelons of science and then view and discuss the data. For example, if a student says that they feel isolated because they are the only individual from a particular ethnic group in their graduate program, a mentor can have a positive impact simply by letting the student know that they are heard and that their concern is recognized. Inclusion speaks to whether individuals have equal access to opportunities and empowerment. In the past few years, for example, I have talked with many students across the United States from historically marginalized groups who feel personally affected by the growing discussions around social justice. From our discussions, students are reminded that scientists make mistakes just like everyone else and that the questions and issues they face are much more grey than the black and white they might have previously considered. To put it plainly, if students don’t feel included in the academic and scientific communities, they are more likely to leave science, and the diversity problem will remain unsolved. This course helps students see how the culture of science has been created and sustained, how it has not encouraged equal participation and how it could be shaped differently to benefit from a diversity of ideas and individuals. Students come to recognize that race is a social construct. The School and the units within are all actively engaged in working to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion. This means most science courses don’t … Still, women and individuals from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds within the United States are underrepresented across the scientific spectrum, including in academic, editorial, and scientific leadership positions. Mary’s main areas of interest are inclusive curriculum development and resources, literacy through science and developing accessible practical work. Inviting everyone to go to the party is diversity, sharing DJ responsibility is inclusion, and having a large enough dance floor for everyone to groove on is equity. My colleague and I started the Science, Ethics, and Society course when we were teaching the biology capstone at Cedar Crest College, in Allentown, Pa. As an all-women’s undergraduate institution, we wanted to generate a “tool box” for our students to help them negotiate their future science careers. We contemplate how science and medicine have not always been welcoming to members of the LGBTQIA+ community or those with a disability, and how our biases can directly impact and perpetuate patient health disparities. Many graduate programs, for example, are making concerted efforts to recruit students from historically marginalized groups, including African-Americans, Latinos, and students with disabilities, but this approach will only succeed if faculty members, administrators, and the scientific community at large also consider the environment that the students are being recruited into, and how to make those spaces truly inclusive arenas where a diverse group of scholars can thrive. We ponder that, while science strives to be objective and unbiased, it is performed by humans, who are, by nature, biased. When we address human subjects in research, we deliberate informed consent, the challenges of study recruitment and drug trial outsourcing. We in the scientific community must make active efforts to ensure that graduate students of all backgrounds have similar opportunities to visualize themselves as scientists by making sure they have access to people they can relate to. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Science Network As a community of more than 24,000 scientists and technical experts putting science to work for a healthier planet and a safer world, the Science Network at the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) can be a powerful tool for change. Faculty members and advisers have to recognize that who students are as scientific trainees cannot be separated from their larger personal identities, which have been shaped by the way the world at large interacts with them. When I was in seventh grade, my dad took me to a local college campus to hear a talk by an African-American woman astronaut, and afterward I had the opportunity to meet her. Therefore, inclusion and diversity are critical to keeping the field intellectually vibrant. In the third unit, we dig further into scientific integrity and research misconduct, who owns and funds science, personalized medicine, genetics and eugenics. Creating an inclusive scientific community, particularly within the context of academic science, is a challenging and multidimensional issue. There many dimensions of diversity and we need to consider how different groups of people conceptualise things and ask questions that make sense to them. It remains an upper-level, discussion-based and writing-intensive course.
