Reading: A Pleasure, Not A Chore – Read Across America Day

Reading is not just the exercise of the mind, but an enjoyment of the heart and soul.
Every year on March 2nd Americans celebrate Read Across America Day to promote the value of reading to children. This date is the birthday of the renowned children’s author, Theodore Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss. Research has shown that children who are motivated and spend more time reading do significantly better in school. It has become a mantra for adults to encourage children to read books as it is an important factor in student achievement. Moreover, the children will find joy in being lifelong successful readers.

Read Across America Day began with a small reading task force at the National Education Association in May 1997. Activities for children were started on March 2, 1998 and children now enjoy the largest celebration of reading America has ever seen.reading
Not only children benefit from NEA’s Read Across America, NEA gets everyone involved in the advocacy resources and activities they need to continue reading on the calendar 365 days a year. There have been many activities organized to promote and celebrate Read Across America, including reading plays or readers’ theatre, reading challenges to children, as well as adults reading to children. As it requires a strong community effort, all schools, libraries, community centers, churches, hospitals, bookstores, and other important institutions are encouraged to host local events to celebrate and promote children’s reading.

On Read Across America Day, children and adults rediscover the joys of reading with their companions – parents, family and friends – amidst the fast-paced world of the 21st Century. They need to see that books are not just requirements in school, but are some of the best things you can enjoy in life.

reading1Remember that every day is a day to read books with relish, with a certain form of love that can only be felt when you read the kind of books you love and feel connected to. So enjoy life and books. Live, love, read, dear friends. Read Across America is just one day to celebrate reading, but you can make any day the best when you finish reading a book that you have admired and loved.

The Rabbit Everyone Loves

Rabbits are fascinating creatures – they curiously observe a situation yet they scurry from unfamiliar things. Their delicate gait and cute furry body have enchanted many an artist and child.

It has been a century since Beatrix Potter wrote the children’s story, The Tale of Peter Rabbit, but it has not been lost through time. Enraptured by the natural ability of children to be fascinated with animals, Potter illustrated the child-like life of a mischievous and disobedient young rabbit named Peter Rabbit. He was chased wildly around the garden of Mr. McGregor for eating the blackberries and green parsley on that man’s property. When he escaped, he went back home to his mother – a sick boy who overate in the garden. She tucked him into bed after dosing him with camomile tea while his sisters had a sumptious dinner of milk and berries.

The Charm of Peter Rabbit

Actually, Peter Rabbit was inspired by a Belgian buck rabbit called Peter Piper who was the author’s pet until 1901. She used him as her model for the protagonist of her children’s story because he was fat, sneaky, good at tricks and very naughty – the exact atittude of Peter Rabbit. Beatrix Potter even dedicated the book to him in an inscription on one of the privately published edition of the books:

“In affectionate remembrance of poor old Peter Rabbit, who died on the 26th of January 1901 at the end of his 9th year … whatever the limitations of his intellect or outward shortcomings of his fur, and his ears and toes, his disposition was uniformly amiable and his temper unfailingly sweet. An affectionate companion and a quiet friend.”

As Beatrix Potter was charmed by her pet rabbit, Peter Rabbit has become a favored fictional character. Whenever people see a real live rabbit, they remember the childish rabbit whose tale captured their hearts.

Inspiration Begets Success

The The Tale of Peter Rabbit was a success. As a children’s book, it was loved by parents for its simple language which children easily understood as the story was read to them. Not surprisingly, it has been translated into 36 languages and is on the pedestal of bestsellers of all time with 45 million copies sold.

As with other books gaining world wide acclaim, this one has inspired many different kinds of merchandise since its release. Sellers and manuacturers have designed and distibuted toys, dishes, food, clothing, videos, movies and televison shows plus other products for both children and adults. The author herself, Beatrix Potter, was one of the pioneers for these business ventures by creating a patented Peter Rabbit doll in 1903 and almost immediately a specifically designed Peter Rabbit board game.

From the books themselves, different variations were produced and sold in the market – pop-ups, activity books, lift-the-flap books. Toy stores have also sold Peter Rabbit-related products, with a whole section specified and earmarked for Beatrix Potter’s beloved characters.

Aside from this, the market has grown to accommodate other products inspired by The Tale of Peter Rabbit story, including kitchenware and dishes, plush toys and pillows plus clothes with the face of cute lovable bunny.

Beatrix Potter’s creation of Peter Rabbit showed how one can have child-like fun and the love of one’s family even in the midst of a difficult trial in life. Children and adults love this rabbit because they see themselves in his adventures.

Superman and American Culture

Superman is one of the most popular American comic book characters ever created. The character was originally created in 1933 by two high school students from Cleveland, Ohio named Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel. Shuster was the artist and Siegel was the writer. In 1938, they would later go on to sell the rights to the character to Detective Comics. Superman made his first comic book appearance in Action Comics # 1 on June 1938. From there, the character went on to being featured in newspaper strips and various radio serials. The success of Superman would end up defining the entire superhero genre and help boost interest in other comic book characters as well.

Superman has always been a symbol of hope. Whatever problem or crisis there is in the world, people know that Superman has the power to fix it. When Superman was first introduced to people in the late 1930s and early 1940s, World War II was actively taking place. Young Americans were impressionable and taken in by what Superman stood for. He was often quoted as fighting for “truth and justice.” He was a character that was triumphant, hardworking and astonishing all at the same time. No matter how powerful his enemies were, he could easily destroy them with his superior powers. As World War II escalated, Superman was now quoted as fighting for “truth, justice, and the American way.” This kind of patriotism from a superhero had never been seen before. In the 1970s, it would later be seen again during the height of the Vietnam War. It was also the decade that spawned one of the most memorable Superman movies of all time starring Christopher Reeve as the title character. From that point forward, Superman memorabilia and content were consistently being produced.

Superman logo

Superman is easily recognizable in his red cape and blue suit with a yellow-and-red “S” shield on his chest. This “S” would go on to symbolize the character in promotional products and advertisements. Now in the 21st century, everybody has heard about Superman in some fashion. Even if you have never actually read any of the Superman comic books before, chances are you’ve heard of Superman by the numerous movies, television shows and video games that have been made about him over the years. You may even see people wearing blue shirts with the “S” shield in the middle just because they want to be like Superman too. Who wouldn’t?

The Joy of Reading a Good Book

Today, it seems far too easy to get caught up in things that take us away from our own imaginations, or at the very least, give us time to relax and ‘get lost’ for a while. From smartphones to hectic schedules, and everything in between, it’s an unfortunate rarity that we get the chance to sit down and read a great book simply for pleasure. Perhaps, though, that’s part of what makes reading a good book so much more enjoyable in the first place.

Most of us start reading fiction books as a child, and are carried away into stories of far off places, invested in the lives of fictional characters, etc. But, as we get older and our lives get busier, we don’t seem to have as much time to get lost and carried away by the characters or stories in a book. We tend to lose the ability to let our imagination drift off simply because we don’t have time for it, or don’t see any benefit in it.

However, even as adults, there are countless benefits to sitting down and enjoying a good book. Not only have studies shown that staying mentally stimulated by reading each day can reduce the risk of diseases such as Alzheimer’s or Dementia, but reading also allows us to continue learning at every stage in life: It expands our vocabulary, improves memory, improves focus, and gives us better writing skills. To say there aren’t any practical benefits to reading isn’t only wrong, it’s an unfortunate way of thinking when there is clearly so much to gain.

If you only need one reason to enjoy a good book, though, enjoy it for the tranquility it brings. Finding time to experience the joy of a good book is a source of stress relief and peace, and if you allow yourself to get ‘taken away’ by that very book, even for a short while, it will add so much to your day filled with chaos, noise, and distractions. Plus, unlike many other forms of entertainment today, reading a book is basically free, if you use your local library, or very inexpensive if you purchase one.

There are so many benefits to reading a good book, but the most important is simply finding happiness and joy in what you’re reading, letting your imagination take over again, and finding a bit of quiet time for yourself to truly enjoy what you’re reading without having to think about anything else.

The Pleasures in Reading a Good Book

“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one.” ― George R.R. Martin

Finding a good book to enjoy can be hard to come by for some. For others, it can be as easy as picking up a book and finding joy in whatever they read.

Much like the joys and pleasures of life, there is always a journey you can get lost in. When you have found a good book, you can always set on a journey you can escape to, and that is how you know you’ve found your match.

Once I pick up a book, and start reading, I almost immediately immerse myself in a world that is unfamiliar to my own. The fascinations on getting the chance to meet the characters that are set before me, is like almost walking hand in hand with them while I accompany them on their journey. As I continue to read, it’s like I become a part of their special world.

The pleasure of slipping into another reality while I escape mine, makes the hours feel like minutes, and soon the day turns into night.

If I don’t get to finish the book, then the lingering imagination and the suspense easily takes over, as I wonder what is going to happen next. The most challenging part for me, however, is getting to the end of the book. I hate goodbyes.

Tearing myself away from the characters I became so familiar with, and the ups and downs that I had experienced along with them, it’s hard to let go at times.

And then, it starts all over again.

The pleasures and the joys you will find while reading a good book is never ending.

The good relationship that existed between the Lost Tribe and Sky walkers seems to be turning sour after they had teamed up in Allies. In this star wars Jedi book, Abeloth faces defeat although the two sides are still determined to double across each other while keeping the secrets that lie between them. Both Ben and Luke seem to tread on very dangerous grounds but it does not take long before they are compelled to flee after they made a discovery that Abeloth was alive. While escaping, the two decided to take Vestra with them so that they could destroy her finally. On Corruscant, the mission that aimed to help Ben and Luke is stalled. The Jedi Council looks tired of the stubbornness of Master Kenth Hamner after it turned out that he was hiding something from the Jedi council.

Star Wars - Vortex - Book - Amazon

Despite young Jedi recovering from the effects of Psychosis, Daala does not acknowledge this progress. However, the Jedi council believes that rescuing Jysella Horn and Valin will help them accomplish at least one of the three things; discreet Daala, reassert the autonomy of the council or serve as a great distraction. When they notice that Daala seems to be the least of their problems as a council, there occurs friction that threatens the council that Luke did his best to achieve.

In simple words, the novel Vortex (Star Wars: Fate of Jedi, book) is all about playing it safe. From the plot, there are a number of issues going on. To begin with, Kenth Hammers is unable to lead the Jedi’s, there are misleading theatrics by Ermauth Bwua’tu’s at the court and Luke makes an assumption that the Sith was only there to betray everyone. This forces Jedi to team up in order to find out how each of the sides is making plans to outdo the other. As much as you may lose interest in the gullibility of Ben when you continue reading the book as I did, you will realize that Luke and Ben comparison seems automatic. Whereas Ben looks idealistic and inexperienced in various matters, Luke is not that gullible farm boy as others may have thought. It appears like the fate of Jedi still has a long way to go although the end looks interesting especially when they manage to stop kenth from continue with his mission of destruction and the Sith looks like it is cooperating on the same.
